Google was slapped with a hefty fine in the European Union for rigging search results. This adds to all of the evidence that Google rigged search results in the 2016 election.
Today the European Commission handed down a $9 billion fine to Alphabet, Google’s parent company. Their decision results from a 7-year investigation in which they concluded that Google modified results to favor their shopping service over their competitors’.
The potential effect of rigging political search results is so insidious that the practice has its own name and acronym – the Search Engine Manipulation Effect, or SEME. In 2015, a study found that Google has the power to actually flip the results of over 25 percent of national elections worldwide.
There’s plenty of circumstantial evidence of foul play by Google, whose old motto “Don’t be Evil” was nixed in 2015. Wikileaks confirmed that Google CEO Eric Schmidt met with Clinton top brass. The New York Times called on Google to modify their results to hide negative Hillary suggestions. And Snopes “debunked” the claim that Google plays dirty, which is usually evidence enough to the contrary.
But the evidence that Google rigs political search results isn’t just circumstantial. Anyone can see the proof by comparing autocomplete results of search engines. Keep in mind that autocomplete results are supposed to be directly tied to what people are actually searching for on the engines.
Here are 10 times Google rigged search results in the 2016 elections.
#1: Hillary Clinton’s Health Problems
Bing and Yahoo point to “health problems”, “health issues”, and “head injury” while Google directs you to Hillary’s headquarters and health plan.
#2: Hillary Clinton Is Awesome
Google thinks you’d like to know about how “awesome” Clinton is.
Bing and Yahoo show you that people think she’s a “(filthy) liar”, “murderess”, “crook” and is “evil”, “corrupt”, and “power hungry.”
#3: Crooked Hillary
So many people were searching for “crooked Hillary” that it showed up at the top of Yahoo and Bing’s results, beating out all the other phrases and names that start with “crooked.”
Google sends you to song lyrics.
#4: Hillary Clinton Vince Foster Murder
People want to know why Vince Foster was murdered and think Hillary had a part in it. At least on Yahoo and Bing they do.
But apparently on Google people just search for pro-Hillary vines.
#5: Hillary Clinton Gay Marriage
When you started searching for “Hillary Clinton ga…,” Google puts “gameboy”, “game of thrones”, and “gandhi” at the top of the list.
Bing returns “Hillary Clinton gay marriage” and “Hillary Clinton gaffes,” which means Google removed those specific results and stuck in general phrases that start with “ga.”
#6: Hillary Clinton Huma Abedin
Google puts “humor”, “human rights”, and “humanitarian” in the top 3. Bing puts “Hillary Clinton huma” front and center and includes “Hillary Clinton huma abedin lovers.”
#7: Hillary Clinton Crooked
This one is even worse than “crooked Hillary,” because so many people were searching for “Hillary Clinton crook” and “Hillary Clinton crooked” that they’re the top two on Bing.
Google gives you “crowd”, “cross stitch” (there’s a lonely feminazi joke somewhere here), and “crown.”
#8: Hillary Clinton Whitewater
Google has no mention of Whitewater and instead wants you to look at the painfully cringeworthy video of Clinton doing an (equally cringeworthy) dance meme on the Ellen Degeneres show.
Bing knows what you’re really looking for.
#9: Hillary Clinton Lies
Bing shows you that people think Hillary Clinton lies and is a liar.
Google wants you to take a look at the New York Times’ biased opinion on what Clinton was really up to in Libya and watch live videos of Clinton rallies.
#10: Hillary Clinton Unlikable/Untrustworthy
Last but certainly not least, when you search for “Hillary Clinton un,” Bing hits you with a triple play of “unlikeable”, “untrustworthy”, and “under investigation.”
Google includes none of those and is give you “Hillary Clinton favorability ratings” to round out the list, which doesn’t even start with “un.”
